It is considered to be very safe as an effective support for the pregnant woman. It is especially valuable as a birth preparation as it helps to build up the strength of the uterus for effective contractions. For full priming, strengthening and nourishing benefits for mother and baby take 1-3 cups daily from the 4th month onwards and 3 cups daily from the 5th month onwards. Raspberry Leaves: Traditionally used to strengthen tone the uterus, and to prepare the womb for childbirth. Infusions of raspberry leaf have been traditionally used as an important gynaecological aid by women of the Cherokee, Iroquois and Mohawk nations of North America. The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia (1996) indicates its use as a preparative for childbirth.
Lady's Mantle: Women in Arab countries believe that this herb restores beauty and youth - needless to say, it is very popular in that part of the world. Traditionally this herb has been used to stop bleeding and promote healing, to regulate menstruation and stimulate the appetite.
Nettle: In traditional African medicine the herb is used for excessive menstruation, and to treat internal bleeding. In India, the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia lists nettle herb for uterine haemorrhage, cutaneous eruptions, infantile and psychogenic eczema, and nosebleed. It is also used as a gynaecological aid by women of the Cowlitz, Cree, Kwakiutl, Lummi, Quinault, and Squaxin nations. It is taken as an aqueous infusion during childbirth to relax the muscles. In Germany, nettle herb is licensed as a standard medicinal tea for it's diuretic action. It is also used as a component of prepared medicines intended for supportive treatment of rheumatic ailments and irrigation therapy in inflammatory conditions of the lower urinary tract It is also used during and following birth and during lactation in traditional women's tonic formulas.
St Johns Wort: This herb has a genuine mild anti-depressant medicinal action and a sedative or relaxing effect. Its action is gentle, yet very effective. It has been traditionally used for its effect on the nervous system. The combination of sedative activity and nervous system restorative properties make it an ideal herb for use in anxiety, irritability, neuralgia, nerve damage or injury, nervous tension, depression and general nervous system debility.
Lemon Balm: Balm is a remedy for common female complaints and is useful for all sorts of nervous problems, including hysteria, melancholy and insomnia. It has been used to relieve cramps, dyspepsia, flatulence, colic, chronic bronchial catarrh, and some forms of asthma. Balm has also been used for migraine and toothache and during pregnancy for headaches and dizziness.
Horsetail: Horsetail has been used as a mild diuretic for fluid retention, particularly for cases of swollen arthritic joints. Horsetail is also used for its diuretic and astringent properties, making it a useful treatment for cystitis, bladder and prostate problems, and kidney stones. Horsetail is a source of the nutrient Silica. This is used to help strengthen weak and brittle nails and hair and can also help wound healing.
Yarrow: Yarrow has been used against colds, cramps, fevers, kidney disorders, toothaches, skin irritations, and haemorrhages, and to regulate menses, stimulate the flow of bile, and purify the blood. Chinese herbal medicine uses this herb for stomach ulcers, amenorrhea, abdominal cramps, abscesses, snakebites, traumatic falls and bleeding, and to reduce inflammation. All of these herbs can be found in this Pregnancy tea.
Use during pregnancy from the 4th or 5th month on. Suited to help relax and tone the uterus and nervous system. Also to ease fluid retention and lower back discomfort. Directions: For full priming, strengthening and nourishing benefit for mother and baby take 1-3 cups daily from the 4th month onwards and 3 cups daily from the 5th month onwards. Continue after birth for a few weeks to ensure a speedy uterine recovery and ease of breastfeeding.
Preparation: Take 1 level teaspoon (1g) per cup (175ml), place into infuser, plunger or china pot, pour over boiling water and leave to infuse for 5-10 minutes. Do not microwave.
Keep out of reach of children. *Check with your health professional if you are on prescription medicines, as St Johns Wort can affect the way some medications work. At the recommended dosage, clinically relevant herb-drug interactions are not know.
