Lutein is recognised as one of the carotenoids. Radiance Lutein is made from the registered extract Xangold. This is specially extracted from marigolds and has been proven to help both with the treatment and prevention of eye related disorders such as macular degeneration. Several studies in the past few years have linked lutein with the prevention of eye and other health disorders. In particular, research has shown how lutein may help in age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Lutein protects the retina by blocking harmful blue light. Recent research has shown that Lutein is especially concentrated in the visual cells of the retina responsible for black and white vision in the dark. Lutein is found specifically deposited in the lens of the eye and cataract formation is associated with an oxidation of the lens protein. A diet high in lutein may slow the development of cataracts. The most common cause for decreased eyesight and blindness in people over 65 years old is age related macular degeneration (AMD), a disease that affects a specific part of the retina. When the macular is strong, it constitutes the region of maximum visual acuity. And when it goes, vision goes. A study at Harvard University found that people whose diets were high in Lutein and Zeaxanthin has a 57% decreases in the risk of developing AMD compared with those who ate little of these ingredients. Lutein and lutein esters are found in foods such as spinach, kale, cabbage, peaches, oranges and pumpkin. However these must be eaten regularly. Studies have shown that lutein significantly reduces the risk of cataract surgery. Those who has the highest intake of lutein has a 20% lower risk of cataract surgery than those who has the lowest. In 1 study titled Nurses health Study, there was an apparent beneficial correlation between carotenoids and clear, normal lenses. Diets high in lutein may also protect against the formation of cataracts. It appears that either eating a diet rich in dark green, leafy vegetables and /or supplementing with antioxidants helps slow the progression of serious eye disease, as well as other health challenges. According to research, lutein may also help prevent the hardening and narrowing of the arteries that can lead to stroke and heart attack. In a study, 480 middle aged women and men, researches found that those with the highest blood levels of Lutein showed the least thickening of their artery walls over 18 months.
