What is Pau d'arco and what is it used for?
Pau d'arco is a huge canopy tree native to the Amazon rainforest and other tropical parts of South and Latin America.
Pau d'arco has a long and well-documented history of use by the indigenous peoples of South America and some believe that its use may actually predate the Incas.
Traditional usage by the Native Amazon peoples includes malaria, anaemia, colitis, respiratory problems, colds, coughs, flu, fungal infections, fever, arthritis and rheumatism, snakebite, poor circulation, boils, syphilis, and cancer. The medicinal properties of Pau d'Arco are said to include analgesic, antibacterial, anticarcinomic, anticoagulant, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antileukemic, antimicrobial, antimutagenic, antioxidant, antiparasitic, antirheumatic, antitumour, antiviral, cytotoxic, immunostimulant and laxative actions.
There is much debate about the purported effectiveness of Pau d'arco in cancer, with some saying that Human clinical trials have been inconclusive regarding the use of lapachol as an anticancer agent, whilst others say there is plenty of clinical data plus the traditional usage of Pau d'arco to prove its effectiveness.
Much of this conflict may originate from the fact that in their quest for the anticancer agent in Pau d'arco, researches decided that the most potent single chemical was a naphthoquinone called lapachol and they have concentrated solely on this single chemical in their subsequent cancer research. The quest for scientific answers often forgets the delicate balance and synergy of natural, whole herbs.
The traditional usage was not isolated lapachol it was whole herb (inner bark) Pau d'arco. Pau d'arco has clearly demonstrated broad clinical actions against a number of disease-causing microorganisms, which supports its wide array of uses in herbal medicine especially for Candidiasis, intestinal infection and parasites.
Antimicrobial properties of many of Pau d'arco's active phytochemicals were demonstrated in several clinical trials, in which they exhibited strong in vitro activity against various gram positive and gram negative bacteria, fungi and yeast (including Candida, Aspergillus, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Helicobacter pylori, Brucella, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and dysentery) in vitro antiviral properties against various viruses, including Herpes I and II, influenza, polio virus, and vesicular stomatitis virus antiparasitic actions against various parasites (including malaria, schistosoma, and trypanomsoma) plus strong activity against 11 fungus and yeast strains.
