Arctostaphylos Uva Ursi or Bearberry
Uva ursi is a urinary antiseptic. Also considered to be an astringent, but some pharmacological studies do not bear this out. The antibacterial effects of this herb are believed to be due to the conversion in the kidney of arbutin to hydroquinine or its esters. Hydroquinone very effectively inhibits the growth of a number of infective organisms including E. coli, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas.
The herbs high tannin content provides efficient local astringency and may assist with reducing diarrhoea. Clinical usage has shown this herb to be useful not only for urinary tract infection, but also for mild urinary tract weakness, urinary incontinence and poor bladder control. May be useful in animal incontinence.
