Q: What is Deer Velvet?
A: Deer antlers are also called velvet. Only male deer (stag) grow antlers and use them to dominate their opponents.
Q: Is the Deer harmed during the Velvet removal process?
A: No, the deer is not harmed. In New Zealand, velvet antler removal (velvetting) is a legally controlled surgical procedure designed to assure the welfare of the stags being velvetted.
The procedure is covered by legislation under the “Animal Welfare Act 1999”. The velvet removal process is only carried out by trained specialists who ensure the welfare of the deer. It is a renewable resource as deer antlers regenerate naturally once a year.
The New Zealand deer industry is committed to the welfare of stags during velvet removal (known as ‘velvetting’) and has undertaken extensive scientific research into this subject. These research findings underpin the Code of Practice for the Welfare of Stags during the Removal of Velvet, published by the government’s National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC). The Code was developed in association with the New Zealand Veterinary Association, NAWAC, MAF and animal welfare groups represented by the Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals.
The Code of Practice, in turn, forms the basis of a training and certification programme managed by the National Velvetting Standards Body (NVSB).
