Echinacea - The importance of Quality Dosage
Fresh or Dried?
The dried root produces an extract that is higher in active alkylamides than using the fresh plant. In fresh plant extracts, the active constituents are more diluted than in a died extract, due to the water content.
The effectiveness of Echinacea for prevention and treatment of cold and flu is dose related. Evidence from clinical trials suggests the preventative dosage for Echinacea purpurea is equivalent of 1000-2000mg dried root per day. Clinical experience suggests the treatment dosage during an acute infection should be 2-4 times greater than the preventative dose, ie 2000-8000mg dried root per day. During the early stage of an infection, it is advisable to take a loading dose daily (in divided doses) and as symptoms begin to resolve the dose can be reduced to two thirds or half the loading dose, and continued until all symptoms have gone.
Duration of use
it is sometimes touted that Echinacea should not be taken for prolonged periods, due to the alleged reduction in efficacy or tolerance that is said to develop with ongoing use. There is, however, no convincing evidence to support this statement.
