100 Million vs 500 Million Akkermansia: Does a Bigger Number Automatically Mean a Better Supplement?
At Healthy, you'll find two CODEAGE Akkermansia supplements: one labelled 100 million, the other 500 million. Both share a named bacterial strain, 90-capsule bottle and one-capsule daily adult format. So what changes?
CODEAGE Akkermansia 500 Ultra provides 500 million AFUs of Akkermansia muciniphila AH39 per capsule, compared with 100 million in the standard formula. That is five times the declared bacterial quantity. Both use AH39, but their chicory inulin amounts differ too. A higher AFU count is a genuine formulation difference, not proof of five times the health benefit.
We stock both options, including CODEAGE Akkermansia 500 Ultra, so you can compare the full formulations.
First, here's what stays the same in both formulas
Both CODEAGE products identify Akkermansia muciniphila AH39. AH39 identifies the declared strain.
Both also include chicory inulin, a plant-derived prebiotic fibre, alongside the bacterial ingredient. Both are synbiotic formulas in enteric-coated vegetarian capsules, designed to help protect their contents during digestion.
Each bottle contains 90 capsules. The adult directions for both say one capsule daily, or as recommended by a healthcare practitioner. The difference is inside the capsule.
Where the fivefold difference actually sits
Our standard CODEAGE Akkermansia formula provides 100 million AFUs of AH39 per labelled serving. CODEAGE Akkermansia 500 Ultra provides 500 million AFUs of AH39 in the same one-capsule serving format.
AFU means Active Fluorescent Units, a fluorescence-based way of counting microorganisms using specified activity or viability criteria. Both state AH39 amounts in AFUs, making the declared quantities directly comparable.
Five times the AFU count is a clear, appealing feature if you're looking for a more concentrated AH39 supplement. But it is a measure of the bacterial ingredient, not a promise of five times the results, faster effects or greater gut colonisation. That's worth remembering.
The surprising part is what happens to the chicory inulin
Here's the detail you might miss if you only look at the Akkermansia number: the standard capsule contains 435mg of chicory inulin, while 500 Ultra contains 276mg.
So the formula with more declared Akkermansia actually has less declared chicory inulin. It isn't a capsule with more of everything.
Inulin is a prebiotic fibre that certain microorganisms in the gut can use. Both formulas bring the bacterial ingredient and plant fibre together, but inulin's presence doesn't prove a particular AH39 result or establish which capsule suits you better.
What you can say confidently is that 500 Ultra places greater emphasis on its declared AH39 quantity, while the standard formula includes more inulin per capsule. It's worth looking beyond the fivefold number.
Does five times the amount mean five times the benefit?
No. A supplement can have a higher declared microorganism count without having five times the effect. Probiotic effects depend on the strain, preparation, amount, study population and outcome.
The two CODEAGE labels tell us something precise: 500 Ultra has five times the declared AH39 AFU quantity. They do not tell us that it will work five times as well for digestion, act five times faster or produce a bigger change in any health measurement.
The published human research cited below doesn't include a head-to-head trial comparing these two finished CODEAGE AH39 formulas. A clearly labelled higher-concentration option remains appealing without that unproven claim.
Why the Akkermansia studies don't settle this exact comparison
Human Akkermansia research is developing, but it hasn't compared our two CODEAGE AH39 products.
In 2019, Depommier and colleagues enrolled 40 adults with overweight or obesity and insulin resistance; 32 completed their exploratory trial. They tested specific live and pasteurised Akkermansia preparations, not CODEAGE's standard or Ultra formulas.
A 2026 trial by Suenaert and colleagues involved 142 adults with metabolic syndrome and used pasteurised Akkermansia muciniphila MucT. Its main whole-body insulin-sensitivity outcome was not significantly different from placebo in the intention-to-treat analysis, although exploratory subgroup findings were reported.
Another 2026 trial, by Mount and colleagues, involved 90 adults in a structured weight-maintenance study using pasteurised MucT. It reported less weight regain than placebo in that research setting. CODEAGE Akkermansia products are not for weight reduction.
These trials involved different preparations and research conditions. They do not show that 500 million AFUs of AH39 works better than 100 million AFUs, or establish a recommended amount for these products.
Why we stock both CODEAGE Akkermansia formulas at Healthy
We stock both because you may prefer different ingredient quantities. We don't assume everyone needs the highest count.
Our CODEAGE Akkermansia standard option combines 100 million AFUs of AH39 with 435mg of chicory inulin. It's a genuine synbiotic option with 90 enteric-coated vegetarian capsules, not an inferior product.
We also like being able to offer CODEAGE Akkermansia 500 Ultra Advanced Synbiotic for those specifically seeking a more concentrated AH39 option. It provides 500 million AFUs with 276mg of chicory inulin, again in a 90-capsule, one-a-day adult format.
Both formulas are vegan, non-GMO and free from dairy, soy and gluten. For an Akkermansia supplement in NZ, you can compare both. For a higher declared AH39 quantity, 500 Ultra is the one we'd invite you to look at first.
One capsule a day doesn't make these interchangeable
Both bottles have 90 capsules and the same one-capsule daily adult label format. Choosing Ultra doesn't mean taking more capsules, buying a bigger bottle or getting a longer supply.
It also doesn't mean you should take several standard capsules to make up the 500 million figure. That would change how much of the whole formulation you take, including the chicory inulin, and go beyond the standard directions.
Compare current prices and ingredients too. More AFUs alone don't establish better value.
When 500 Ultra is the product worth exploring
If you've been specifically searching for a higher-concentration Akkermansia muciniphila AH39 supplement, this is where 500 Ultra stands out. You get a clearly named strain, a declared 500 million AFUs per capsule and chicory inulin together in an enteric-coated vegetarian capsule. You keep the one-capsule daily adult format.
A quick safety note: Follow the label and don't exceed the recommended amount. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, have a medical condition, weakened immunity or serious illness, or have questions about medicines, check with a suitable health professional first. Read the full ingredient list for sensitivities or allergies.
Keep the bottle away from children and pets, and don't use it if the safety seal is damaged or missing. This is a food supplement, not a product for weight reduction. The standard formula needs the same care with directions and suitability.
Check the full ingredients, directions and precautions before choosing.
Common questions
Is 500 million Akkermansia better than 100 million?
500 million is the higher declared AH39 AFU quantity, which makes 500 Ultra appealing if concentration is your priority. But there's not enough direct evidence to say it's universally more effective. Both CODEAGE formulas have their own ingredient proportions, including different amounts of chicory inulin.
Is CODEAGE Akkermansia 500 Ultra five times stronger?
In terms of its labelled AH39 AFU quantity per capsule, yes. 500 Ultra provides 500 million AFUs compared with the standard product's 100 million. That is five times the declared count, not a finding that it delivers five times the clinical benefit.
Do both CODEAGE Akkermansia products use the same strain?
Yes. Both of our CODEAGE product listings identify Akkermansia muciniphila AH39. That shared strain name makes the declared AFU quantities especially straightforward to compare. The finished capsules are still different formulations because their bacterial counts and chicory inulin amounts are not the same.
Why does the 100 million formula contain more chicory inulin?
The standard formula declares 435mg of chicory inulin per capsule, while 500 Ultra declares 276mg. They have different ingredient proportions. We can't say why CODEAGE chose those precise amounts, or claim that either inulin level guarantees better tolerance or more effective AH39 supplementation.
Does 500 Ultra last longer than the standard CODEAGE Akkermansia?
No. Both contain 90 capsules, and both have adult directions of one capsule daily or as recommended by a healthcare practitioner. The fivefold difference is in the declared AH39 AFU quantity per capsule, not in the number of capsules or the labelled length of supply.
Can I take several 100 million capsules instead of 500 Ultra?
We wouldn't recommend that as a DIY substitute. Each product has its own directions, and taking multiple standard capsules also changes how much chicory inulin and other formulation ingredients you consume. Follow the label and speak with a healthcare practitioner if you have dosing questions.
Has 500 million AFU of AH39 been proven to work better in human trials?
Not in the research described here. The human Akkermansia studies involved preparations different from these finished CODEAGE AH39 supplements. They do not establish that 500 million AFUs of AH39 leads to better outcomes than 100 million AFUs in the two products we stock.
