50mg vs 100mg vs 160mg 5-HTP: What Do the Numbers on Supplement Labels Actually Mean?
Put a 50mg 5-HTP bottle beside a 160mg bottle and the larger number looks like the obvious winner. But is it?
When comparing 5-HTP 50mg vs 100mg vs 160mg on the same per-capsule basis, the numbers tell you how much 5-HTP each capsule contains. They do not tell you whether one product will work better, act faster or suit you. Other ingredients, product directions and possible medicine interactions matter just as much.
At Healthy, we carry different formulations. See them in our 5-HTP collection while we make sense of the numbers.
What the mg number actually measures
Mg means milligrams. On our three standalone examples, it measures 5-HTP in one capsule. So 50mg is 50 milligrams of 5-HTP; 100mg is twice that quantity; and 160mg is 3.2 times the quantity in a 50mg capsule.
This compares ingredient amounts, not effectiveness or how much you should take.
The ingredient list gives the number its meaning. Some labels say the 5-HTP is extracted from Griffonia simplicifolia seeds. If a label also gives a separate weight for the plant extract, don't mistake the total extract weight for the amount of 5-HTP. Use the declared 5-HTP amount, not a guessed extract concentration.
Three real strengths from our 5-HTP range
50mg: Clinicians 5-HTP Mood Care. Our Clinicians 5-HTP Mood Care 50mg contains 50mg of 5-HTP from Griffonia simplicifolia seed per capsule. The 60-capsule product also contains calcium lactate and capsule ingredients. It's a lower-strength standalone option for those interested in 5-HTP rather than a multi-herb blend. That doesn't make it suitable for everybody.
100mg: Good Health High 5HTP. Good Health High 5HTP 100mg contains 100mg of seed-derived 5-HTP per vegetarian capsule, without added calming herbs. That is double the Clinicians ingredient quantity. At the time of writing, this product was sold out, so check its live page for availability.
160mg: GO Healthy Go 5-HTP 160mg 1-A-Day. Our GO Healthy Go 5-HTP 160mg 1-A-Day contains 160mg of Griffonia simplicifolia seed-derived 5-HTP per vegetarian capsule. It contains no added calming herbs or magnesium. The 60-capsule pack directs one capsule daily. 1-A-Day describes the product, not a universal ideal amount.
These are three ingredient quantities, not steps to progress through or a ranking of results.
Why a larger amount does not promise a bigger result
5-HTP takes part in the body's production of serotonin, which is one reason it appears in supplements positioned around mood and sleep support. That's why the strengths catch your eye.
What the number cannot show is how you'll respond. A 160mg capsule does not have proven 3.2-times-greater benefits than a 50mg capsule. More 5-HTP on the label does not guarantee better sleep, more dependable mood support, quicker effects, longer-lasting effects or better tolerance.
Research into 5-HTP supplements for many promoted outcomes is still limited, with small studies and mixed findings. In particular, it has not been established as a treatment for insomnia. Its serotonin-related interactions also deserve attention. Dietary supplements in New Zealand don't undergo general Medsafe pre-approval for effectiveness either.
Two of our 5-HTP products share the same 50mg number
Two quite different products in our range contain 50mg of 5-HTP per capsule.
Clinicians 5-HTP Mood Care is the more focused capsule. Alongside its 50mg of 5-HTP, it has calcium lactate and the other ingredients needed to make the capsule. It's worth exploring if you prefer a simpler formula.
Our Good Health Deep Sleep also contains 50mg of 5-HTP per capsule, but there is much more to its formulation. It brings in passionflower, Californian poppy and Jamaican dogwood extracts, plus magnesium and vitamin B6. We carry both 30- and 60-capsule options.
The identical 50mg doesn't make them interchangeable. You may prefer a more focused capsule or want to examine a sleep-support blend. Deep Sleep's additional ingredients need their own interaction and suitability checks.
We like being able to offer both styles at Healthy. You can compare what's inside, not just the bold number. Neither formula automatically delivers better results. Adding herb-equivalent weights to 5-HTP doesn't create a meaningful combined strength.
The words beside the number matter too
Labels show several numbers, but they mean different things. For example, 60 capsules on the Clinicians or GO Healthy pack tells you how many capsules are in the bottle. It certainly doesn't mean 60mg of 5-HTP.
The ingredient line tells you how much 5-HTP is in one capsule. The directions tell you how that particular product is labelled for use. And the rest of the ingredient list tells you whether you're looking at a focused capsule or a blend with herbs and nutrients.
1-A-Day is GO Healthy's product direction, not a rule for every 5-HTP supplement. Read the full label rather than working out your own combinations or increases.
One thing the label cannot tell you: whether 5-HTP is suitable for you
Before trying 5-HTP, consider what else you're taking. 5-HTP can interact with medicines that affect serotonin. Health New Zealand identifies 5-HTP among supplements that may raise the risk of serotonin syndrome when combined with other serotonin-increasing substances.
If you take an antidepressant, including an SSRI, SNRI or MAOI, do not add 5-HTP without guidance from your treating health professional. The same care applies to other prescription medicines, sleep medicines and supplements such as St John's wort. Do not combine multiple 5-HTP products on your own, and never change a prescribed medicine to make room for a supplement.
5-HTP may cause nausea, diarrhoea or other stomach upset, and drowsiness can be a concern. Our featured 5-HTP products carry warnings against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Children should not use these products without professional guidance.
Seek prompt medical advice for worrying symptoms; confusion, high fever or seizures require urgent care. Choosing 50mg does not remove these precautions.
Where to explore the actual products at Healthy
Our range gives you several useful options to explore. Clinicians Mood Care offers a focused 50mg capsule. GO Healthy 160mg gives you a larger stated amount in a focused vegetarian capsule. Deep Sleep offers a different kind of product, with 50mg of 5-HTP alongside additional herbs and nutrients.
Our 100mg Good Health product was sold out on 30 October 2026. If 160mg interests you, explore its ingredients, directions and precautions below, without assuming the highest strength is best.
Common questions
Is 160mg of 5-HTP stronger than 50mg?
It contains more 5-HTP per capsule when both labels state the amount on that basis. In fact, 160mg is 3.2 times the ingredient quantity of 50mg. That doesn't mean it works 3.2 times better or is more suitable for you. The full label and your circumstances still matter.
Is 100mg of 5-HTP twice as much as 50mg?
Yes. If both figures refer to one capsule, 100mg contains twice as much 5-HTP as 50mg. This is simply a comparison of labelled ingredient amounts. It isn't advice to change your intake, take extra capsules or expect twice the effect from the higher-numbered product.
Does 50mg of 5-HTP mean the same thing in a blended supplement?
Yes, if the label declares 50mg of 5-HTP per capsule, that ingredient amount is still 50mg. But a blend can also contain herbs, minerals or vitamins, so the overall formulation is different. Compare the other ingredients and precautions rather than assuming two 50mg products are identical.
Does 1-A-Day mean that 160mg is the right amount for everyone?
No. 1-A-Day refers to the directions for the specific GO Healthy product. It doesn't establish a universal amount of 5-HTP that everyone should take. Your medicines, other supplements and personal circumstances may affect whether the product is appropriate at all, so check with a qualified health professional if you're unsure.
Is higher-strength 5-HTP better for sleep?
There isn't reliable evidence that a higher-strength 5-HTP capsule is better for everyone's sleep. The amount on the label does not prove a better outcome, and 5-HTP has not been established as an insomnia treatment. You can still compare our formulations, but it makes sense to keep expectations realistic.
Can I take two different 5-HTP supplements together?
We don't recommend combining them without professional advice. You could end up doubling up on 5-HTP or overlapping other active ingredients, while increasing the chance of unwanted effects or serotonin-related interactions. Ask your pharmacist or treating health professional to check everything you're taking before adding another product.
