Saccharomyces Boulardii in NZ: Why a Probiotic Yeast Is a Different Decision
Two probiotic products can both display CFU on the front. The obvious comparison may appear to be the number.
Then you read the organism names. One product contains bacteria. The other contains a live yeast.
Before comparing the number, have you checked what kind of microorganism is actually inside?
The number is not the first difference
Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast. Lactobacillus, Limosilactobacillus and Bifidobacterium products contain bacteria. Some Bacillus formulas use spore-forming bacteria. Some products combine bacterial strains with S. boulardii.
These configurations are not automatically interchangeable. Organism type changes which strain identity should be verified, which evidence can reasonably be applied, which medicine questions should be asked, which safety precautions matter, and whether a product is yeast-only, bacterial, spore-based or a combination.
CFU is supporting information, not the first decision. A larger number does not make one organism category universally better, stronger or more suitable.

Saccharomyces boulardii is not a complete identity when the strain code is omitted. Probiotics are identified by genus, species and strain, and some effects may be unique to a particular strain. Two products can use the same species name while differing in strain, preparation, added ingredients, format and labelled serving.

The medicine conversation changes with organism type

- Exact strain: Was the strain identifier reported?
- Exact preparation: Was the same organism configuration, format and formulation studied?
- Relevant population: Were the participants comparable to the intended user?
- Same measured outcome: Did the research measure the claim now being considered?
Evidence for probiotics generally cannot automatically be applied to S. boulardii. Evidence for one S. boulardii strain cannot automatically be transferred to another strain. Evidence involving a clinical population cannot automatically become self-treatment advice for a healthy shopper.
A guideline statement about one endpoint does not prove broader digestive benefits. The American Gastroenterological Association guidance, published in 2020, illustrates this preparation-specific and endpoint-specific approach by naming particular organisms or combinations for defined clinical contexts. It does not establish that every S. boulardii strain or retail product has the same evidence.
In particular, guidance that mentions S. boulardii does not validate the NOW I-3799 product. That would require evidence matching the exact strain, preparation, population and outcome.
Stop before comparing products
Seek professional advice rather than continuing a retail comparison when you:
- are severely unwell
- are immunocompromised
- have a central venous catheter
- are receiving hospital or intensive-care treatment
- take immunosuppressive medicine
- take antifungal medicine
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
- are shopping for a child
- have persistent, severe, unusual or recurring digestive symptoms
- are considering a probiotic alongside prescribed treatment
Serious probiotic-related infections are uncommon, and probiotics are unlikely to cause harm in healthy people. Reported severe infections have mainly involved people who were severely ill or immunocompromised. Published reports involving Saccharomyces-containing probiotics have also included intensive-care patients and people with central venous catheters.
