What Does 30C Mean on a Homeopathic Remedy? Understanding C and X Potencies in Plain English
It is easy to pause when you open a homeopathic product and see a code such as 30c. Our Arnica 30c Tablets are a simple example. Then you open a formula such as Menomed and see 12x, 30c, 12c and 60x together. What exactly are those numbers and letters measuring?
The short answer is that the letter tells you the homeopathic preparation scale, while the number tells you how many serial dilution and succussion stages were carried out. C is the centesimal scale, based on a 1-in-100 dilution at each stage. So 30C means thirty centesimal stages. It does not mean 30 percent, and it does not mean 30 mg.
Start with the letter in 30C
Read the C first. In homeopathic notation, C identifies the centesimal scale. At each serial stage, one part of the preceding preparation is used in a total of 100 parts, followed by the shaking step known as succussion.
That makes C a preparation code. It tells you which dilution scale was used, not how many milligrams are in a tablet or what percentage appears in the finished product.
If you want the broader background on homeopathy, formats and general choosing considerations, our Homeopathic Remedies Complete Guide covers that. Here, we are staying focused on what the potency code itself means.
Now read the 30
Once you know what C means, the 30 becomes much easier to read. It tells you that the centesimal process was repeated thirty times.
In simple nominal maths, 1C corresponds to 10-2, 2C to 10-4, and 30C to 10-60 relative to the starting concentration. You do not need to calculate that when you shop. The useful point is simply that every C stage repeats the 1-in-100 step.
So the 30 in 30C is not a percentage. It is not a dose in milligrams. It is the number of serial centesimal stages used in the stated preparation process.
Change just one letter: 30C becomes 30X
Now keep the 30 and change only the letter.
X identifies the decimal homeopathic scale. Each X stage uses a 1-in-10 dilution rather than the 1-in-100 scale used for C. That means 30X represents thirty decimal stages.
This gives you the easiest rule to remember when you are looking at homeopathic potency numbers: the letter tells you the scale, and the number tells you how many times that scale was repeated.
That is why 30C and 30X are not two ways of writing the same thing. The number is the same, but the dilution scale at each stage is different.
Change the number next: what 60X adds
Next, keep X and change 30X to 60X. If you have wondered what 60X means in homeopathy, the answer follows the same rule: 60X means sixty decimal stages, each using the 1-in-10 scale.
There is an interesting piece of maths here. A 60X sequence and a 30C sequence both correspond to a nominal overall dilution factor of 10-60. That does not make them identical products. They reach that nominal factor through different preparation sequences: sixty decimal stages for 60X and thirty centesimal stages for 30C.
We would not use that matching nominal dilution to claim the two are clinically equivalent. It simply shows why you need to read both parts of the code rather than looking at the number alone.
You can see both codes on our shelves
Once you know the rule, the notation becomes much easier to spot across our Homeopathics range.
Arnica 30c Tablets are the cleanest example. The name and ingredient information both use Arnica 30c, so you can read that as Arnica prepared through thirty centesimal stages.
Naturo Pharm Menomed is a particularly useful mixed example. Its current ingredient information lists Amyl Nitrate 12x, Lachesis 30c, Sanguinaria 12c and Sepia 60x. Here, one formula contains both decimal and centesimal notation. In plain English, 12x means twelve decimal stages, while 12c means twelve centesimal stages.
Coughmed Relief gives you another live example. Its ingredient information includes Rumex Crispus 30x and 60x, Bryonia 30c, Hepar Sulph 30x and 60x, and Belladonna 30c. Again, the codes describe the stated potency scales and serial stages used for each ingredient.
Then there is Belladonna Plus, which lists Belladonna in a potency chord of 6c, 12c, 15c and 30c. That shows another possibility: several potencies of the same named remedy can appear together in one product.
Why we do not use the biggest potency number as a shortcut
At Healthy, we treat the potency code as one piece of product information. It is not a quality score, and it is not enough on its own to tell you which product fits what you are looking for.
When we help someone make sense of our range, we still look at the named remedy or formula, whether it contains one or several remedies, which potency scale or scales are used, the format, the complete ingredient list, the labelled directions, the way the product is positioned, and any precautions or suitability information.
Menomed is a good example of why that matters. It contains 12x, 30c, 12c and 60x in the same formula. Looking only for the largest number would miss most of the useful information on the label.
That is also why we like giving you a curated range where you can compare the complete product, not just one code. Browse the formula, format, ingredients and directions together, then choose from the information that is actually relevant to that product.
What 30C does not tell you
30C does not mean 30 percent, and it does not mean 30 mg. The code also does not tell you that a product is better quality because the number is larger, or that a larger number has greater proven effectiveness.
It also cannot tell you, by itself, whether a particular remedy or formula suits your circumstances. And it is not a reason to change the labelled dose. Follow the directions for the individual product rather than adjusting how you use it based on the potency number.
If you are choosing a product for significant, persistent or unclear symptoms, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for a child, or alongside medicines where advice may be needed, talk with an appropriate health professional. Where the science differs from homeopathic terminology
Homeopathic potency has a specific meaning inside the preparation system: it describes the stated dilution scale and the number of serial dilution and succussion stages. That meaning should not be turned into a scientific claim that a product will produce a particular health result.
The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health states that there is little evidence to support homeopathy as an effective treatment for any specific health condition. Many highly diluted homeopathic preparations also reach nominal dilutions where conventional chemistry would not generally expect molecules of the original starting material to remain.
At the same time, it would be too absolute to say that every product labelled 30C must literally contain zero molecules of its starting material. The US Food and Drug Administration notes that products labelled homeopathic can vary, and some have been found to contain measurable amounts of active ingredients.
For us, the useful distinction is simple: the potency code explains the stated preparation scale and serial dilution. It does not prove effectiveness or guarantee a health outcome.
Common questions about homeopathic potency codes
What does 30C mean in homeopathy?
30C means the remedy is labelled as having gone through thirty stages on the centesimal homeopathic scale. Each C stage is based on a 1-in-100 dilution followed by succussion.
What does the C stand for in 30C?
C stands for the centesimal scale. In this notation, each serial stage uses a 1-in-100 dilution.
What does the number 30 mean?
The number 30 tells you that the stated dilution and succussion stage has been repeated thirty times on the scale shown by the letter.
What is the difference between C and X potencies?
C uses the centesimal scale, with a 1-in-100 dilution at each stage. X uses the decimal scale, with a 1-in-10 dilution at each stage.
Is 30C the same as 30X?
No. Both use the number 30, but 30C means thirty centesimal stages while 30X means thirty decimal stages. The preparation scales are different.
Why can 30C and 60X have the same nominal dilution?
Thirty 1-in-100 stages and sixty 1-in-10 stages both correspond mathematically to a nominal overall factor of 10 to the power of -60. They still represent different preparation sequences, so the matching maths does not make them identical products.
Does 30C mean 30 percent?
No. 30C is homeopathic preparation notation. It does not mean 30 percent, and it does not mean 30 mg.
Is a higher homeopathic potency number automatically better?
No. The potency number is not a quality score, and a larger number does not establish greater proven effectiveness. Read the complete product information rather than using the largest number as a shortcut.
Why do some Healthy formulas contain both C and X potencies?
Some combination formulas list ingredients prepared at different stated potency scales. Menomed, for example, includes both C and X notation, so reading the letter as well as the number helps you understand the ingredient list.
Does the potency code tell me whether a remedy is effective?
No. The code describes the stated preparation scale and serial dilution stages. It does not prove that a remedy is effective for a particular health condition or guarantee a health outcome.
