Hyaluronan (HA or hyaluronic acid) is a long chain molecule that consists of alternating units of N-acetylglucosamine and glucuronic acid. HA can absorb up to 3,000 times its weight in water and is an important hydrating agent for tissue. HA is found in virtually all tissues and fluids of the body, especially synovial (joint) fluid, the eyes vitreous fluid and in the skin. HA plays a critical role in maintaining healthy joint synovial fluid and preventing the degeneration of aging joints HA has a high daily turnover, so large amounts may be needed to maintain normal steady-state levels. HA is also a regulatory molecule influencing cell movement, phagocytosis and blood vessel formation. HA also serves as a free radical scavenger and antioxidant, and may be particularly important to protect the skin from the aging effects of excessive sunlight exposure. HA is critically important in healthy wound healing. HA stimulates DNA synthesis and fibroblast cell division, essential for healthy skin and cartilage maintenance. By the time a person reaches age 30, his or her HA becomes disorganised from skin collagen protein, compared to the interweaving of HA and skin collagen in a nine year old and is even more disconnected in the skin of a 60 year old. Type II collagen proteoglycan (PG) proteins have a remarkable absorption rate of up to 70 to 90%, are an integral part of moveable joints and are essential components of cartilage and intervertebral discs. Studies have shown type II collagen to be particularly helpful for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Although the mechanism is not fully understood, type II collagen seems to not only help strengthen cartilage, making it very useful for many other connective tissue disorders, but it also manages to 'switch off' the autoimmune response in RA. In one trial on patients with severe reactive RA, those who were taken off all other medication and received type II collagen supplementation experienced significant stabilisation and improvement. Four patients had complete resolution of the disease with no reported side effects. The patients in the placebo group continued to deteriorate. Dosage
