Yeasts (fungi) are a family of organisms that occur everywhere in nature. The most well known yeast is probably Candida albicans, a common inhabitant of the human intestinal tract, mucous membranes of the mouth, skin and vagina. Normally C.albicans is kept in balance by our so-called beneficial micro flora. Alteration of this balance can result in the Candida proliferating out of control. This may result in the condition known as Candidiasis (moniliasis), which an overgrowth of causes the symptom Thrush.
Certain predisposing factors are known to increase the likelihood of developing a Candida overgrowth. Kolorex Advanced Candida Care contains a liquid extract of pseudowintera colorata, more commonly known as Horopito. This New Zealand herb has a long history of traditional use. The main active in horopito is polygodial, which has shown powerful activity in the laboratory. Independent in vitro studies have shown that Kolorex is probably more useful than Pau d Arco or Olive leaf extract in helping your natural defences.
In 1982 a group from Canterbury University in NZ reported they had isolated a substance called polygodial in the leaves of Horopito. They grew cultures of candida albicans and measured the zone of inhibition in these cultures from the leaves of P.colorata. They found it was very effective at inhibiting candida. Comparison with the drug amphotericin B found that polygodial gave larger zones of inhibition. It also suppressed candida colony growth from day one, while amphotericin B required 3-4 days incubation. Microscopic examination revealed untreated control cells of candida to be large, round , smooth and actively budding. In contrast, polygodial treated cells were elongated, small and had a rough deformed appearance. Comparison between the effects of polygodial and the imidazone anti-candida agent Miconazole suggests both act by preventing cell division.
In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) researchers established a direct correlation between vaginal yeast infection and the simultaneous overgrowth of candida in the digestive tract. In the 98 consecutive cases examined they found that yeast overgrowth was not restricted to the vagina alone, but also in the digestive tract. The investigators concluded that a 'cure is not likely as long as the vagina remains the only treatment target. Precautions
