Magnesium is a vital co-factor in several hundred enzymatic reactions in the human body. Scientific studies have shown that magnesium supports normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, helps heart muscles relax, supports healthy blood pressure, supports a healthy immune system and strong bones, supports healthy blood sugar levels, is necessary for the metabolism of vitamin C, phosphorus, potassium and sodium. Magnesium is known to be involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis, therefore a deficiency of magnesium may result in a wide variety of health problems. Sixty percent of the body's magnesium is found in the bones and the rest is found mainly in the soft tissues and blood. Scientific studies have shown that magnesium also supports healthy homocysteine and C-reactive protein levels. Magnesium is easily depleted when the body is under worrisome situations, exercise and poor dietary choices. A typical diet is notoriously deficient in magnesium and only contains a fraction of the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance). Caffeine and alcohol consumption also deplete magnesium levels.
