Natures Way Cascara Sagrada is a laxative, liver and gall bladder tonic. Different to other laxatives, instead of being an irritant to the body, it produces more bile, which increases the peristaltic contraction or the normal squeezing and contraction of the bowel and attracts more fluid to the bowel.
A lot of people are reluctant to use a laxative and rightly so, as these can make an already sluggish bowel, even more sluggish. The laxative we recommend at the clinic is the herb Cascara Sagrada. Cascara is different to any other laxative. Most laxatives work by introducing an irritant into the body. We have a bowel motion from this because all the body wants to do is get rid of the irritant as fast as it can, which produces the evacuation. Cascara regulates the colon. It promotes the normal squeezing and contraction of the bowel and tones the intestines as well as the rest of the body. It increases the secretions of the liver, stomach, pancreas and lower bowel - but is not an irritant to the bowel. It is much gentler on the system than Senna or Aloe, but is very effective, providing relief overnight (6-8 hours).
