The name ashwagandha, loosely translated, means "strength of 10 horses", due to its tonic and reproductive enhancement properties. Better known in New Zealand as Withania, this herb has been used for more than 4000 years in India.
It is an important herb in Ayurveda (traditional Indian herbal medicine), used for various conditions including tumors, inflammation (including arthritis) and a wide range of infectious diseases.
The main active constituents are the withanolides. These constituents resemble, both in action and appearance, to the active constituents of the ginsenosides found in Panax or Korean ginseng. This is why some people refer with
Ashwagandha as Indian Ginseng.
Mental health is perhaps one of the most promising areas of application of this herb. In 1 study, it was given to 30 people suffering from anxiety neurosis. At the end of 1 months treatment most of the anxiety disorders, panic attacks and similar mood phobias had disappeared. In trials by American psychiatrists, Ashwagandha has been found useful for the treatment of manic depression, alcoholic paranoia and schizophrenia. Learning enhancement and memory retention has improved substantially.
Studies have shown that that this herb is helpful for reducing inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis. The plants high steroid content was found to be more potent than hydrocortisone in animal and human arthritis research. It is commonly found in male and female reproductive and sexual debility and sub fertility conditions. It is said to infuse fresh energy and vigor into a system worn out due to any constitutional diseases like syphilis, rheumatic fever etc., or from over work.

Each Capsule contains a standardised extract of Ashwagandha, dried extract (root) 500mg, standardised to 2.5% withanolides. Other ingredients: Plant derived cellulose (Capsule), rice powder, silica.
Adults: Take 1 Capsule two to three times a day, with water or food.
