Schizandra is historically listed among China's most important herbs where the berries where highly valued for their ability to preserve a youthful appearance, increase libido and sexual stamina in both men and women. It was also used to strengthen the lungs, kidneys and adrenals.

What does the research show with Schizandra?
Recent research studies have indicated that Schizandra has numerous medicinal actions including adaptogen, anti-bacterial, mild stimulant, liver protective, anti-depressant, antioxidant, adaptogen and cardiac tonic.
As an adaptogen Schizandra increases the cellular energy supply to tissues in the brain, liver, nerves, muscles, glands and kidneys. It is also thought to help support and boost the immune system and protecting against free radical damage, especially in the liver.
The lignans, mainly the Schizandrins have been found to help prevent liver damage, stimulate liver repair, and stimulate normal liver functioning. Through improved liver function and bile production Schizandra also improves digestion of fatty foods, helps cleanse the blood and enhances overall health.
Other studies have shown that extracts of Schizandra are stimulating to the central nervous system and are cholinergic (stimulate the release of acetylcholine at nerve junctions). There have been numerous reports on Schizandra's ability to quicken reflexes, increase work efficiency, control anger and combat neurasthenia's (headaches, insomnia, dizziness and palpitations).
How about Schizandra for cognitive function?
Other reports have mentioned increased cognitive function and increased memory. A recent study concluded that Schizandra may be a useful herb to help reverse depression, particularly that due to adrenal exhaustion. Schizandra has gained a reputation as a smart drug in recent times. It is a safe herb for long term use with the best results seen with the positive cumulative effect of extended use which strengthen the constitution, increase the ability to resist stress whether chemical, physical or emotional and enhance resistance to disease. In China it is said that with 100 days of use Schizandra will "purify the blood, make one radiant and restore the liver".
Schizandra is used mainly to help support the immune system in resisting disease and infection. Works well in harmony with Ginseng and Astragalus.
