While the exact etiology of benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is still largely unknown, most of the evidence points to hormonal changes that occur in middle age and elderly males.
A primary area of focus has been the role of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) - an extremely active form of testosterone found in high concentrations in the prostate tissue of BPH patients.
DHT stimulates hyperplasia at a higher rate than other androgenic hormones.
5-alpha-reductase (5-AR) is the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into 17-beta-estradiol.
Both 5-AR and 17-beta-estradiol activity increases with age and their primary focus is in the prostate gland, triggering prostate tissue growth.
