Put an empty water bottle on the bench beside two products that both say hydration or electrolytes. From the front, they can look as though they are doing much the same job. Turn them around and the useful comparison begins.
Electrolyte powders are not interchangeable. Start with sodium per serve, then look at potassium, magnesium and calcium, what else has been added, and how much water that serve is meant to go into. The finished drink tells you more than the word electrolyte on the front.

On an electrolyte label, sodium is one of the first numbers we check. Look for the amount in milligrams, usually shown as mg per serve or mg per scoop.
Sodium helps maintain normal fluid balance and is involved in normal nerve signalling and muscle function. It is also one of the electrolytes lost in sweat, which is why it is a useful first label line when you are choosing hydration support for exercise, heat or substantial sweating.
That does not mean the biggest sodium number automatically wins. A sodium electrolyte powder with a higher figure may make sense in one situation and be unnecessary in another. Activity duration, intensity, heat, sweat losses, diet and individual health circumstances all matter.
We would rather see you understand the number than chase it. Read the sodium per serve, then keep moving down the label.
Then read potassium
Potassium is another major electrolyte. It helps with normal fluid balance inside cells and is involved in nerve transmission and muscle contraction.
You will often see less potassium than sodium, or sometimes a similar amount. There is no rule that the two numbers have to match. The useful point is simpler: potassium is another measurable part of the finished formula, so read the actual milligrams rather than assuming every electrolyte powder contains the same spread of minerals.
When people talk about sodium potassium magnesium electrolytes as though they are one standard blend, labels quickly show why that is not the case.
Magnesium and calcium can round out the mineral picture
Magnesium supports normal nerve and muscle function and is involved in many enzyme reactions in the body. Calcium is best known for its role in bones, but it also has normal roles in muscle function and nerve signalling.
In an electrolyte drink powder, these minerals may appear as supporting parts of a broader mineral formula. Their presence can be useful to note, but this is not the place to choose a product simply because it has the longest list.

Now look at what else went into the scoop
Once you have read the electrolyte minerals, scan the rest of the ingredient list. This is where two hydration powders can become very different drinks.
You might see carbohydrate or sugar, stevia, monk fruit, coconut water powder, trace minerals, vitamins, amino acids or flavouring. None of those details makes a formula automatically better or worse. They tell you what kind of product you are holding.
Carbohydrate can be useful in some sports situations because it can provide fuel as well as affecting the taste and composition of the drink. That does not mean every electrolyte powder for exercise needs sugar. Sugar-free formulas can make sense when you want minerals without added carbohydrate, while products containing carbohydrate may suit a different training or fuelling plan.
Sweeteners such as stevia or monk fruit can keep a formula sweet without adding much or any sugar. Coconut water powder and trace minerals broaden the ingredient story. Vitamins and amino acids add functions beyond the core electrolyte mix. Flavouring matters too, because a drink you enjoy is easier to use as directed.
The key is not to reward the longest ingredient list. Decide whether the extras are useful to you, then return to the mineral amounts and the serve directions.
The bottle size changes the drink
This is one of the easiest label details to miss. Milligrams per serve only tell half the story. You also need to know how much water that serve is meant to go into.
Imagine one product provides its listed minerals in 400 to 500 mL of water, while another concentrate provides its listed minerals in one litre. Even if a single mineral number looks similar, those instructions produce different prepared drinks.
That is why we always read the serving size and the mixing directions together. A scoop, sachet or measured liquid serve is only the starting point. The water volume completes the formula you actually drink.
Do not make a product stronger just because you want more electrolytes. Follow the label. If you need a different mineral profile, choose a formula that better fits what you are looking for rather than changing its preparation instructions.

Flavour may decide whether a drink sounds appealing, but the back of the label tells us far more. Here are three examples from our range that show how much can sit behind the same broad hydration idea.

Biosphere Hydrate Essential Mineral Replenishment is our clearest example of an electrolyte-first powder. One 5.5 g scoop provides 500 mg sodium, 99 mg potassium, 50 mg magnesium and 50 mg calcium. It also contains 1000 mg coconut water powder and 100 mg ionic trace mineral complex.
That label gives you a straightforward way to read the product from the minerals up. Sodium is the largest named electrolyte amount, potassium comes next, magnesium and calcium add supporting minerals, and the coconut water powder and trace mineral complex broaden the formula. Monk fruit is used among the other ingredients, so you can also see how the mineral panel and the flavour system sit together in one scoop.
Swanson Simply Hydrate shows how extras change the formula
Swanson Simply Hydrate Electrolyte Hydration Mix takes a different approach. Each sachet lists 350 mg sodium, 350 mg potassium, 100 mg magnesium and 65 mg calcium, plus 500 mg taurine, vitamin C and several B vitamins.
Its directions say to mix one sachet with 400 to 500 mL of water. That preparation detail matters just as much as the mineral list. It also shows why you should read beyond the word electrolytes: this is a mineral blend with added vitamins and an amino acid, packaged as a single-serve drink mix.
BioTrace Elete is a useful mixing-volume check
BioTrace Elete Electrolyte Liquid is not here to turn this into a powder-versus-liquid comparison. It is simply a good calibration example.
A 2.5 mL serve lists 125 mg sodium, 125 mg potassium, 45 mg magnesium, 450 mg chloride and 20 mg sulphate, and the directions say to add that serve to one litre of water. Read only the 125 mg sodium line and you miss an important part of the drink. Read 125 mg sodium plus one litre of water and you understand the prepared serve much better.
When we compare electrolyte formulas, we look past the flavour name and read the complete serve. Sodium is a useful place to start, but the supporting minerals, added ingredients and mixing directions tell you what kind of drink you are actually buying.
Electrolyte supplements are not the same as oral rehydration salts
This distinction matters whenever illness is involved. Pharmacy oral rehydration salts, often shortened to ORS, are made with a specific balance of salts and sugar and are mixed with a defined amount of water. Healthify NZ explains that the right balance and correct water volume are important when ORS is used for dehydration associated with illness.
An everyday wellness or sports electrolyte powder should not automatically be treated as an oral rehydration solution. We do not recommend Biosphere Hydrate, Elete or another general electrolyte supplement as a treatment for dehydration caused by vomiting or diarrhoea.
If illness is causing significant dehydration, you cannot keep fluids down, diarrhoea is severe, you are becoming confused or very drowsy, or you have other concerning symptoms, seek medical or pharmacy advice promptly. Moderate or severe dehydration needs proper assessment.
There is another reason not to assume that more fluid is always better. During prolonged exercise, excessive drinking can dilute blood sodium and contribute to exercise-associated hyponatraemia. Hydration needs vary, so avoid forcing large amounts of fluid and follow individual medical advice if you have been given fluid or electrolyte restrictions.
Put the whole label together before you choose
By now the empty bottle on the bench has a much clearer story. Water is the base. Sodium is the first mineral line to check. Potassium adds another major electrolyte measure. Magnesium and calcium may broaden the mineral profile. Then the sweeteners, carbohydrate, coconut water, trace minerals, vitamins, amino acids and flavouring tell you what else is coming along for the ride.
Finally, the serving size and water volume tell you what those numbers become in the drink you actually make.
